DELTA® containers

Scalable, lightweight protective containers engineered around large, high-value and mission-critical equipment.

DELTA® Containers extend B&D’s configurable case construction into larger and more complex equipment protection requirements.

The system combines aluminium extrusion with lightweight honeycomb panels to create a strong, reusable container that can be scaled around the payload rather than limited by standard product dimensions.

B&D has used DELTA®-based containers for equipment ranging from complex Defence systems to spacecraft, satellites and scientific instruments, including containers exceeding four metres in height and supporting payloads weighing several tonnes.

Why choose this solution?

Barum & Dewar works with an extensive range of established protective case and container manufacturers, allowing us to focus on finding the right solution for your application rather than promoting a single product or material.

Highly configurable dimensions
DELTA® construction can scale around large or unusually proportioned equipment without relying on fixed mould tooling or catalogue dimensions.
Reusable and reconfigurable
The modular construction can provide scope for modification where programme requirements or payloads change.
Strong, lightweight structure
Honeycomb panels are held within an aluminium extrusion framework to provide structural performance while managing overall container weight.
Reduced return-shipping volume
Depending on the design, lid sections can be collapsed to reduce the size of the empty container for return transportation.
Suitable for heavy payloads
Base structures can be developed for payloads weighing several tonnes, with the support and interface arrangement engineered around the equipment.
Integrated equipment protection
Shock isolation, interface plates, internal support systems and environmental features can be developed as part of the complete container design.

Designed around the payload

For large or highly sensitive equipment, the relationship between the payload and the container needs to be engineered carefully.

B&D considers equipment geometry, mass, centre of gravity, support locations and fragility alongside lifting, transportation, access, storage and environmental requirements. The container structure and payload interface can then be designed together using 3D CAD.

Where required, the equipment can be mounted to an engineered interface plate supported by carefully selected wire shock mounts or other isolation systems to manage shock and vibration through transportation and handling.

Practical solution

Protection for sensitive and mission-critical equipment

DELTA® has been applied extensively to high-value Space and scientific hardware. Depending on the requirement, containers can incorporate:

Shock-mounted payload interfaces.
Environmental sealing.
Humidity and pressure monitoring.
Dry-air or inert-gas purging.
Pressure management.
Removable or multi-section lids.
Shallow loading bases.
Bespoke lifting and handling features.
Cleanroom-compatible arrangements.

The exact configuration is developed according to the payload and programme requirement.

Scalability

Scalable from individual systems to major containers

One of the strengths of DELTA® is its ability to scale. B&D’s current capability includes smaller equipment containers as well as structures more than four metres high.

For University College London’s SuperNEMO experiment, B&D developed two highly bespoke DELTA® containers measuring approximately 4.75 m x 2.5 m x 3.7 m, with an all-up gross mass of around 5,000 kg. The system incorporated wire-rope shock-mounted frames and continuous dry-air purging during transport.

Proven programmes

Proven across demanding programmes

DELTA® containers have been used by B&D across a range of Space, Defence and scientific projects, including satellite transport solutions for Planet Labs, Turion Space, NanoAvionics and Thales Alenia.

This experience informs new projects but does not dictate the design. Every container continues to be

Why Barum & Dewar?

DELTA® combines B&D’s own configurable container architecture with our wider design, engineering, manufacturing and Through Life Support capability. That means the container can be considered as one complete system: outer structure, payload interface, shock protection, handling, environmental controls and operator requirements.

B&D can also assess whether DELTA® is genuinely the right construction for the project. In some circumstances a fully fabricated aluminium container or another protective packaging format may provide a more appropriate solution.
