Design

From complex requirements to engineered protective solutions.

Effective protective packaging starts long before manufacture. It begins with understanding what needs to be protected, where it needs to go, how it will be handled and what needs to happen when it gets there.

B&D’s in-house design team works closely with clients to translate these requirements into practical, engineered solutions. This can range from selecting and adapting an established protective case through to designing large bespoke containers, rack systems, foam interiors and associated handling equipment.

Our aim is to develop a solution around the complete requirement, balancing protection with weight, handling, transportation, access, operational use and long-term value.

Understanding the complete brief

Every project starts by establishing what the packaging needs to achieve.

Equipment dimensions are important, but they are only part of the picture. Our team considers weight, fragility and centre of gravity alongside expected transportation methods, storage conditions, environmental exposure, lifting and handling, deployment and operator requirements.

This early review can identify practical issues that may not be immediately apparent within the original specification and allows them to be addressed before manufacture begins.

Design

3D CAD and virtual design

Where customer CAD data is available, it can be incorporated into the design process to model the equipment within the proposed case or container.

B&D uses 3D CAD to develop the packaging, internal supports, foam, interface plates and other components around the equipment itself. This provides a clear view of the proposed solution, helps assess clearances and access, and allows design reviews to take place before manufacturing data is released.

Engineering protection around the equipment

For sensitive equipment, the design process can include detailed consideration of shock and vibration.

B&D has access to shock-analysis capability that can help determine suitable protection, whether through calculated foam cushioning, wire shock mounts or other isolation systems. The approach depends on the equipment and the conditions it is expected to encounter.

The result is a packaging system in which the outer container, internal protection and equipment interface have been considered together.

Design reviews that reduce risk

Clients remain involved throughout the design process.

Reviewing the proposed solution before manufacture gives technical teams, operators and other stakeholders the opportunity to confirm that requirements around protection, loading, access and use have been properly addressed.

Once approved, the controlled design data becomes the basis for manufacture, helping maintain accuracy from concept through to the finished solution.
