Bespoke containers

Fabricated containers

Bespoke transit and storage containers engineered around equipment that cannot be adequately protected by a standard case format.

Some equipment requirements demand a container designed from the ground up.

Barum & Dewar designs and manufactures bespoke fabricated transit and storage containers for valuable, sensitive, large and unusually shaped equipment across Space, Aerospace, Defence, Offshore and Industrial applications.

Construction, internal protection, access, environmental control and handling features are developed around the payload and its complete journey. Solutions can range from smaller equipment-specific containers through to large structures designed to carry loads weighing several tonnes.

Why choose a fabricated container?

Barum & Dewar combine extensive experience working with fabricated containers, specialist protective packaging, and engineering knowledge. This means we can look beyond the case itself and develop a solution around the requirement and its requirements.

Designed around the payload
Dimensions and construction can be developed specifically around equipment rather than being restricted by an established case size.
Environmental protection
Sealed construction, purge systems, pressure management, desiccant ports and humidity monitoring can be incorporated where the equipment requires controlled conditions.
Suitable for large and unusual equipment
Fabricated construction provides flexibility where equipment geometry, weight or handling requirements move beyond standard protective case formats.
Engineered shock and vibration protection
Interface plates, support frames, engineered cushioning and wire shock mounts can be developed around sensitive payloads.
Robust metal construction
Depending on the requirement, containers can use aluminium, steel or a combination of fabricated components to provide the required structural performance.
Handling designed as part of the container
Lifting points, forklift access, shallow bases, removable lids, trolleys, lifting fixtures and other handling arrangements can be incorporated from the outset.
Capabilities

From sensitive equipment to large-scale containers

B&D’s fabricated container capability covers a wide range of applications. For sensitive Space and Aerospace hardware, designs can provide mechanical and environmental protection while supporting cleanroom handling, controlled humidity and inert gas purging.

At the larger end of the scale, robust aluminium and steel structures can be designed around heavy or irregular equipment, with dedicated interfaces, load-bearing bases and purpose-designed lifting arrangements.

Bespoke fabrication is not limited to very large assets. Small and medium-scale containers can also be built where a project needs particular dimensions, finishes, fittings or environmental features that cannot be achieved efficiently using a standard product.

Designed around your equipment

Every fabricated container starts with the equipment and its operational requirements.

B&D considers dimensions, mass, centre of gravity, fragility and support points alongside transport methods, lifting, loading, storage, environmental exposure and the way the equipment will be accessed at its destination.

3D CAD is then used to develop the container and internal system together. For a sensitive payload this may include a shock-mounted interface plate or sub-frame. Other projects may require bespoke brackets, restraints, access panels, removable sections or specialist handling features.

Key features

Environmental control

Some equipment requires more than physical protection. Project-specific fabricated containers can incorporate features such as:

Sealed construction
Pressure relief valves
Purge valves
Desiccant ports
Humidity indicators
Environmental monitoring
Cleanroom-compatible materials and finishes

The precise combination is determined by the payload and programme requirement.

Handling

Loading, lifting and movement

Large or heavy equipment can introduce significant risk during loading and unloading. B&D can consider the complete handling process during design, including base height, lid arrangement, lifting interfaces, forklift access and additional handling equipment.

Where required, lifting beams, fixtures, trolleys and other purpose-designed equipment can be developed alongside the container.

Assessment

Inspection and testing

Testing requirements are agreed according to the project. For specialist equipment containers this can include load testing, lifting checks, drop testing, water-spray testing and functional assessment of handling and environmental features.

Reports and certification can be provided where applicable.

Reusable solutions

Built for continued use

A well-designed fabricated container can remain an operational asset for many years. Existing containers can also be assessed for repair, refurbishment, modification or repurposing where equipment or programme requirements change.

Why Barum & Dewar?

B&D combines in-house design and engineering capability with experience developing specialist fabricated containers for demanding equipment protection requirements. Because fabricated containers form part of a much wider protective packaging portfolio, our team can also establish whether a fully bespoke metal solution is genuinely required or whether an established or DELTA®-based format could provide a more appropriate answer.
